Canyon Nights @ Capilano Suspension Bridge

image1There’s a lot going on in and around Vancouver during the holiday season, but Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge just might take the cake for most festive (and fun!) Although the Cap Suspension Bridge is often thought of as a tourist playground (which isn’t exactly un-true during the spring/summer time), Canyon Nights transforms the park into a “winter wonderland” that locals (and toursits) alike are sure to appreciate. To avoid long lineups and a crowded park, I’d recommend checking it out on a weekday evening. With hundreds of thousands of lights decking out the park, suspension bridge, cliff walks, cafes and shopping areas, it truly is a sight to see.

It’s crazy to think how much time and effort must go into setting up for Canyon Lights, but it’s well worth the admission price ($32.95) – which may seem a bit steep, but if you’re a BC resident the admission price actually gets you a multiple-use pass that’s good year-round! It’s a great way to spend an evening with friends, family or a special someone. After you’re done taking a walk through the park and throughout the canyon walks, you can grab a spiked hot chocolate (Baileys & hot cocoa) or a craft beer at the outdoor cafe (reasonably priced at about $6 per drink!) There’s also plenty of food and snacks available, as well as gingerbread decorating for the kids (or young at heart). There was a live band performing in front of the souvenir shop when we checked it out last week as well (so festive…)

Eco Fashion Week 6th Edition: Day 3

Eco Fashion Week 6th Edition: Day 3 - April 24, 2013

Eco Fashion Week came to a close yesterday with a solid collection of shows. The first set included Hey Jude and My Sister’s Closet.  Hey Jude features the designers Lauren Clark and Lyndsey Chow, and their particular brand is a vintage style collection made from upcycled materials from markets and thrift stores.  My sister’s closet was created by the Battered Women’s Support Services formerly from East Vancouver.  Their colorful style featured both women and men’s wear.

The next set was called the Collectif Ethik-BGC followed by Qispy Kay Beachwear.  Collectif Ethik-BGC featured Mama Rawa, Awaj Warmi, Aywira, World Hippie Originals.  Qispy Kay’s unique swimwear by Peruvian Designer Sandra Jazmin Higueras teamed up with adornments by Isla Found in a combination show.

The last set of Eco Fashion Week was Circle Craft Collective.  This final set included Adhesif, Vanessa T. Cunningham, Sans Soucie, and bags by FIVELEFT that Lincoln Heller personally detailed on the runway and handed to the crowd.

Eco Fashion Week 6th Edition: Day 1

Eco Fashion Week 6th Edition: Day 1 -  April 22, 2013

Eco Fashion Week kicked off its 6th season in Vancouver this Monday at Robson Square.  Eco Fashion Week promotes sustainable innovations in fashion and encourages the green and environment friendly atmosphere always present in Vancouver.  This is one of the biggest fashion show productions in town and a must for all Fashion lovers.

The first day started off with a set of Fashion Shows presented by Value Village, promoting second hand wears as a trend toward future for self styling and personal expression of creativity.  The first series included the Thrift Chic Challenge, where each Stylist/Designer were presented with the task of creating 15 unique and complete looks with a budget of $500.  Considering that one (1) Louboutin Shoe costs about that much, creating unique styling to show off to the fashion conscious public without being boo’ed off the stage would be a considerable and complex challenge.  These stylists had enough grit to go through with this challenge, and created unique sets of styles for their budget.  Sara Gourlay diplayed a set of classy black dresses, Sandy Karpetz with her Pretty Secrets line showed a colourful gypsy style, and Jasmine Zhu finished the series with her flowery vintage looks.

The Next show was a long series of designs showcased for the “68 pound challenge“.  The 68 pound challenge corresponds to the amount of clothing material trashed by an average American every year.  Kim Cathers was tasked with creating another set of high fashion looks using 68 pounds of discarded Value Village fabrics and clothes.  Kim had been through this challenge before and no doubt had a strong strategy to tackle this mission.  The end result was 30 looks made with the refuse piles no one would ever see, turned in to a beautiful creative and unique set that will encourage the public to do some styling of their own and motivate the reuse of second hand fabrics and clothes.

Gastown Tattoo Celebration Art Show

Gastown Tattoo Celebration Art Show – April 20, 2013

Gastown Tattoo Parlour hosted a 2 year Anniversary Celebration Art show this weekend.  This was an open and local community event.  Everyone was welcome, with food and refreshments on the house.  The evening included live music, and was a very chill and relaxed atmosphere commonly found at a trendy lounge.

We were in Gastown Tattoo Parlour previously as part of our research in to the process of tattoo removal a few weeks ago (see it here at our previous article!).  Breaking away from the image of a stereotypical tattoo parlour, the venue is open and airy, well lit and clean. Showcase of their talent is shown on the walls and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere definitely helps put one at ease.

Watch for Gastown Tattoo Parlour to be represented at Vancouver Tattoo Show @ the Vancouver Convention Centre coming April 26 – 28th!

Fashion Cares: Human Trafficking Awareness & Fundraiser

Fashion Cares: Human Trafficking Awareness & FundraiserMarch 28, 2013

Last Thursday, Vernard Goud of LuvNGrace threw a fantastic event at the gorgeous Waterfall Building to help raise awareness and raise money to fight human trafficking. It was an intimate event that included fashion shows by Smitten DesignsCarnal Designs, Amanda Jackson Designs for swimwear, and Anna Talbot, while renowned artist Miriam Aeroeste showcased a series of her painted works. The event was sponsored by Danier Leather, Lancome Paris, and the wonderful Deborah’s Gate organization, which helps victims of human trafficking.

Glendene Grant gave a touching speech about her daughter, Jessie Foster, who has been missing for seven years. Jessie had been travelling across North America, and was recruited by someone in Calgary for a job in Las Vegas. Her whereabouts from there on out are unknown, but it is believed that she fell victim to an international human trafficking ring. It was definitely difficult to hear what Glendene and her husband have been through these past seven years, but they’ve been doing everything in their power to raise awareness about the human trafficking industry (my naive self had no idea it was such a prominent industry in North America). Glendene and her husband haven’t given up the search for Jessie – you can learn more about their daughter’s story at http://www.jessiefoster.ca/

The event was hosted by Mandy Ross of Fashion TV and Press Play Establishment. I had a chance to catch up with Mandy, who’s got a lot of interesting projects on the horizon, including future hosting duties with LuvnGrace and other media outlets in town. To keep up with Mandy, check out her official website at http://mandy-ross.com/ - always really refreshing to meet other people with a ton of drive and passion for what they do!

Other attendees included the always amazing Tamara Ryan of Earth Essence Jewelry, Pam Jackson of Street Cat DesignsTimeline Boutique’s Azura Cook (who also happens to style Mandy) international supermodel Kecia Nyman, and the extremely talented Nancy Perreault, who has some exciting new designs up her sleeve, including an expanded menswear line!
