Beauty & Fashion Against Ageism

This past weekend, Vernard Goud of LuvnGrace Affair put on a fashionable event at the Waterfall Building with the theme ‘Beauty & Fashion Against Ageism’ – the second event of its kind this summer. The evening consisted oftwo fashion shows – the first by Blushing Boutique, and the second by swimwear company Qispi Kay Swimwear (both brands have been staples at several of Vernard’s previous events). What made the shows so special and memorable were the models – all of whom were in their 30s/40s/50s. In a world where (seemingly) 98% of models are in their teens or early twenties, it was a refreshing and (much welcomed) change to see mature talent walk (and rock) the runway. The event drew a large, diverse crowd with plenty of familiar faces to the Vancouver fashion scene.

Proceeds from the evening supported Beauty Night Society (a great cause that Vernard is quite fond of). The organization builds self-esteem and changes lives for women and youth living in poverty through streams of programming wellness, life skills development and makeovers. “Changing the world one life-makeover at a time” is their mantra. Since their inception 12 years ago, Beauty Night has helped with 26,000 life makeovers, thanks in large part to their 500 volunteers! A silent auction also took place, with donations from the likes of Bella Garnet, Lashfabulous, Skin By Lisa Marie and The Beauty Boutique at Shopper’s Drug Mart.

A Night for the Sophisticated and the Beautiful

A Night for the Sophisticated and the Beautiful - July 6, 2013

The Waterfall building was venue to a very special fashion show this weekend.  Presented by LuvnGrace & Beauty Ink, a collection of elegant and mature models walked the runway that night.  It was a celebration of fashion and style for the “older” generation as ex-models and mothers strutted in support of Beauty Night Society.  The event was hosted by Mandy Ross and included live performance by Sarah K.

The fashion shows included collections from Standing Armed & Drama Queen.  See below for images from the event!

Fashion Cares: Human Trafficking Awareness & Fundraiser

Fashion Cares: Human Trafficking Awareness & FundraiserMarch 28, 2013

Last Thursday, Vernard Goud of LuvNGrace threw a fantastic event at the gorgeous Waterfall Building to help raise awareness and raise money to fight human trafficking. It was an intimate event that included fashion shows by Smitten DesignsCarnal Designs, Amanda Jackson Designs for swimwear, and Anna Talbot, while renowned artist Miriam Aeroeste showcased a series of her painted works. The event was sponsored by Danier Leather, Lancome Paris, and the wonderful Deborah’s Gate organization, which helps victims of human trafficking.

Glendene Grant gave a touching speech about her daughter, Jessie Foster, who has been missing for seven years. Jessie had been travelling across North America, and was recruited by someone in Calgary for a job in Las Vegas. Her whereabouts from there on out are unknown, but it is believed that she fell victim to an international human trafficking ring. It was definitely difficult to hear what Glendene and her husband have been through these past seven years, but they’ve been doing everything in their power to raise awareness about the human trafficking industry (my naive self had no idea it was such a prominent industry in North America). Glendene and her husband haven’t given up the search for Jessie – you can learn more about their daughter’s story at http://www.jessiefoster.ca/

The event was hosted by Mandy Ross of Fashion TV and Press Play Establishment. I had a chance to catch up with Mandy, who’s got a lot of interesting projects on the horizon, including future hosting duties with LuvnGrace and other media outlets in town. To keep up with Mandy, check out her official website at http://mandy-ross.com/ - always really refreshing to meet other people with a ton of drive and passion for what they do!

Other attendees included the always amazing Tamara Ryan of Earth Essence Jewelry, Pam Jackson of Street Cat DesignsTimeline Boutique’s Azura Cook (who also happens to style Mandy) international supermodel Kecia Nyman, and the extremely talented Nancy Perreault, who has some exciting new designs up her sleeve, including an expanded menswear line!

Upcoming Event: ‘Fashion Cares’ Human Trafficking Awareness/Fundraiser

Mark your calendars, Sociables. This coming Thursday (March 28th), LuvnGrace, Lancome Paris, Danier Leather and Bella Garnet Beauty Salon present ‘Fashion Cares’ – a human trafficking awareness & fundraiser at the Waterfall Building in Olympic Village (1540 West 2nd Avenue).

The event will be hosted by Fashion TV’s Mandy Ross, and will feature shows by Danier Leather, Anna Talbot, Amanda Jackson Swimwear, Carnal Designs and Smitten Designs.

Tickets are just $70, with 30% going directly to Deborah’s Gate – an organization that seeks to provide a safe and restorative environment that supports female victims of human trafficking. You can grab your tickets at Bella Garnet (1042 Hamilton Street), or order them online through www.luvngraceaffair.com.

THE 2013 DAVID BOWIE FASHION GLAM-BALL

THE 2013 DAVID BOWIE FASHION GLAM-BALL - March 14, 2013

If I could name the biggest fan of David Bowie in this city, I would say Vernard Goud of the LUVNGRACE-AFFAIR.  And he just happened to present a fabulous party celebrating Bowie’s first in 10-year album release of The Next Day, inviting all Bowie fans to his FASHION GLAM-BALL.  It was a truly outrageous tribute filled with Bowie inspired music, dance, and fashion, with guests actively taking part by adorning themselves with costumes and makeup in the Bowie style.  The event took place at the newly established Vancouver Fanclub and was hosted by Fashion TV’s Mandy Ross, and included fashion shows featuring: MITMUNKNANCY PERREAULT, and PRETTY BASTARD.

And a sparkly bicycle helmet.  Anyways, I just take the photos, so see them below!

La Saint Valentin at The Waterfall Building

La Saint Valentin at The Waterfall Building – February 14, 2013

Don’t have someone to give you chocolates and flowers on Valentines Day?  Well just go out to a fabulous nightlife event.  ‘La Saint Valentin’ was a full featured evening of art, culture and fashion, and far more than just an excuse to get away from the couple-focused Valentines event.

This spectacular event was hosted at The Waterfall Building, an excellent and classy choice of venue.  The evening’s itinerary were presented by Vernard Goud of LuvnGrace and Hennessy Cognac and hosted by FashionTV’s Mandy Ross.  The fabulous (normally skylit) glass enclosure called the Waterfall Building sparkled under the night sky and was adorned by a gallery of visual arts by Miriam AroesteStacy Sakai, and Liza Lee.

Professional fashion apparel operators strutted the wares of their respective designers.  The fashion show lineup included Nicole BridgerNancy Perreault with Hive Mind Millinery, Designs by Guylaine Theriault, Sans Soucie and Pretty Bstard, including accessories by Mishe Jewels and Smitten Designs.  These shows were interspersed by live musical performances featuring Jim Cummins, Jan Sam, and Sarah K.

The evening wasn’t over when the shows ended.  The guests had a chance to chat with the artists and models, including many photo opportunities.  All this amounted to a perfect night of beauty and art for those who were looking for more than a romantic night for two.  What does it mean for the rest of the people?  As far as I’m concerned the true secrets of Valentines day can be found with mini cupcakes.  And cognac.

The Parlour Yaletown Fashion Shows Mixer

THE PARLOUR YALETOWN FASHIONSHOWS MIXER – January 28, 2013

LuvnGrace & Bella Garnet Beauty Salon presented a social mixer and series of fashion shows this Monday at The Parlour Yaletown, a stylish restaurant at the heart of Yaletown.  It was hosted by Fashion TV’s Mandy Ross and formulated in association with promoter Vernard Goud.

The Parlour features a menu festooned with comfort foods, featuring a variety of artist inspired gourmet pizzas, i.e. #swag.  Even the pizzas have hashtags, but it includes golden honey as a topping (!).  Drinks wise, in addition to the variety of beers, the lounge is most well characterized by the wines on tap.  So I guess I would have to call it a pizza and wine parlour.

The relaxed and classy atmosphere was the perfect place for a social mixer.  A place where
one can appreciate culture and art, in this case via fashion shows.  Comfortable antique wooden sofas included.

Featured Fashion Shows (in order of appearance):

TRINA MARIE CAIRNS bringing the western high fashion dresses, combined with all the hattery by HIVE MIND MILLINERY

Sexy Peruvian designer swimwear via QISPI KAY BIKINIS

NANCY PERREAULT featuring shiny sparkles and Justin Voitic w/ Mickey Mouse Sunglasses

LADY GAGA: THE BORN THIS WAY BALL – THE AFTERPARTY

LADY GAGA: THE BORN THIS WAY BALL – THE AFTERPARTY – January 11, 2013

DJ Lady Starlight made an appearance at Republic last Friday after her Born This Way Ball concert with Lady Gaga.  This was another fantastic event formulated by Vernard Goud of LuvNGrace, in association with Interscope Records, Bella Garnet, Donnelly Group and AXS.

People who thought the show was over after the concert definitely missed out.  In addition to getting to hang out with Lady Starlight, a variety of amazing shows took place at Republic, MC’d by FashionTV’s Mandy Ross.  There were live performances by Kristen Karma followed by Carol Cox.  Stiletto Fit Dance took the floor to show off what they were all about while Glitter Machine Body Paint had their fabulous body painting strutting around on display.

The fashion shows started with the sexy Peruvian designer bikini by Qispi Kay Beachware, followed by Element 7 body chains, the unique Rogue Designs, and ending with fashion by Misty Greer + hats by Hive Mind Millinery.  Also featured were some stylish leggings by Dutch Blonde.

When Lady Starlight finally made the scene, she was instantly swarmed by media.  I squeezed my way in through the fans and got to have a short chat with Lady Starlight before she was whisked away.  When I asked what she loved most about Vancouver, she pointed at me and responded with a word: “You!” I assume she was referring to the people of Vancouver, not me specifically… I think… ?

Pink Elephant Thai VIP Christmas Party

Pink Elephant Thai VIP Christmas Party

This past Monday, LuvnGrace threw a VIP Christmas Party at Pink Elephant Thai, which included fashion shows from Timeline Boutique, Smooch Boutique Swimwear & Element 7 Style. The venue was packed, housing hoards of models, photographers, media pro’s and a few notable Vancouver names.

Smooch Boutique showcased a very diverse line of edgy women’s swimwear, with pieces that were young, playful and (at times) daring. With collection names like “Adore Me”, “All Dolled Up”, “Resort Chic” & “Lounge Chic” it’s obvious that there’s something here for every woman, for any occasion that calls for swimwear. Needless to say, the vision of swimsuits had just about everybody in the room longing for summer…

Timeline Boutique is a consignment shop specializing in high-end women’s wear, boasting brands like Louis Vuitton, Betsey Johnson, Fendi and Jimmy Choo. Timeline is one of only a handful of high-end consignment shops in Vancouver, and they offer up dozens of brands at up to 90% off retail. A friend who frequents Timeline said that a lot of the clothes they carry still have the tags on them (Christmas shopping, anyone?) Now, if only they carried menswear…

Last but not least was Element 7 Style – a company specializing in body jewelry. The brand makes cool, edgy pieces that can instantly dress up even the simplest of outfits. Most of the pieces have been “upcycled” – that is, made from a combination of vintage and new materials. I’ve actually been familiar with Element 7 for a while – the lead in a film I worked on in 2011 wore some of their pieces in several scenes, and just about every woman on set needed to know where they were from.

This was my first time visiting Pink Elephant Thai, so my friends and I sampled a few items off the menu – all of which were amazing. If you’re thinking of checking it out, I’d suggest wrangling a few friends and sharing one of their group platters (huge variety of food & good portion sizes). Their signature bright pink booths, in-house DJ, great menu and all-around cool vibe make for a great joint to grab some dinner, or have a few cocktails (or if you’re me, do both).

Who said Mondays couldn’t be any fun? ;)

Beauty Night Society Fundraiser

Beauty Night Society “Luxury Travel, Art & Beauty Fundraiser” by LuvNGrace, Artistrun Collective & Golden Brush Art Events - November 26, 2012

Imagine the Ultimate Vancouver Fundraiser Variety show at the most fantastic venue and the perfect fusion of music, visual arts, fashion, and charity.  Well, stop imagining, because it already happened.  The event took place at the fabulous Fortune Sound Club and organized and hosted by Beauty Night SocietyVernard Goud: a curator of fantastic events in ever changing locations,  Kirsten Larsen of the Artistrun Collective, and Golden Brush Art Events.

They were daring enough to run the event competing with the concurrently performing Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen concerts.  Even with the tag-team of heavy hitter opponents such as those, the fundraiser still drew in quite a crowd, and anyone who didn’t make it definitely missed out.  The fundraiser was in association with Beauty Night Society, a Canadian charity that assists women in poverty via promoting self esteem and wellness by providing many essential services including makeovers and life skill development.

The show was presented by the Vancouver Television host Mandy Ross.  The lineup included a painting competition, fashion shows, live musical performances by Jody Quine and Diane Reyes, body art by Kristen Grant, Visual slide photography show by Disposable Landscapes, and DJ Boy Meets Girl.  It also included silent auctions (for the fundraiser) and booths giving product demonstrations for health and beauty products and services.

Live Battle of the Brush painting competition was held by Golden Brush Art Events.  Three teams of  two talented artists (with Bill Higginson + Jamil Keyani, Olga Rybalko + John Shaw, and Raymond Chow + Arlana Green) battle it out live and on location and under a time limit, and to be judged by the guests at the event for the ultimate win.  This prestigious award went to Olga Rybalko and John Shaw with the Swans, and in addition to the coveted victory, they also won a trip to Las Vegas for their awesome work.

The first fashion show featured the Numa Models displaying the crafty design skills of One Piece Vancouver with The Optical Boutique, and Rogue Designs.  The first show was featuring One Piece Vancouver with their awesome locally handmade indie boutique scarves, coupled with the unique eye ware from The Optical Boutique for a one-two accessory combo. This was later followed by a second show with the strong, bold and unique Rogue Designs.  Read more about Rogue Designs Fashion at our previous coverage!

All the while, Brent Ray Fraser was giving a performance in composite visual arts, combining painting with live-action abstract performance art that was a show in it self.  It involved candles, a banana and stripping (i.e. clothes).

Read about the products that were demonstrated (note: I’m not endorsed by any of them at all, and all of this is unsolicited), and scroll down to see more photos!
